/ KILI 14MF) 7 Day: MOUNT KILIMANJARO CLIMB
MARANGU ROUTE . |
Mount
Kilimanjaro
Mt.
Kilimanjaro , is the tallest freestanding mountain
in the world at 19,340 feet. The climb is a five-day
trek of varying gradients and climates - from tropical
to arctic. The culmination of the climb is the African
dawn at the summit - the "Roof of Africa"
Marangu
Route is the most popular and the most often climbed
route. It is relatively easier and best for inexperienced
climbers. Accommodation is in typical mountain climbing
huts with shared rooms and facilities controlled by
National Park Authorities. On summit day, successful
climbers will reach Gillman's Point and then proceed
to Uhuru Peak at the very summit of the mountain!!!
Day 1 - ARUSHA
( TANZANIA )
Arrival
from either Nairobi Jomo Kenyatta International Airport
or Kilimanjaro International Airport . Overnight in
Arusha Novotel. Today at leisure to acclimatize, prepare
and go through orientation before you begin the climb
tomorrow .
Novotel
Day 2
- ARUSHA - MANDARA HUT (KILIMANJARO)
Stage
1. Arusha - Marangu - Mandara
Drive 2 hrs, Trek 7 km, 4-5
hrs, Ascent 720m, Alt: 2700m
Slowly
start up the beautiful lower slopes of the mountain.
A wide path winds up through a tall hardwood forest,
then through a stretch of rain forest and across several
streams. The path gets narrow as it breaks out onto
the high grasslands and ducks back into clumps of
trees before you hit Mandara Hut, your first night's
stop at 9,000 feet.
Mandara
Hut
Day
3 - MANDARA - HOROMBO
Stage
2. Mandara to Horombo
Trek: 11Km, 5-7 hrs, Ascent
1020m, Alt 3720m
You start
out with a steep ascent through dense forest. After
about 45 minutes you break out into the open grasslands
and you'll have your first glimpse of Kilimanjaro's
twin Peaks; the majestic dome of Kibo Peak and the
wilder, but lower Mawenzi Peak favored by technical
climbers. You will see the trail traversing the mountainside
and gaining altitude at a reasonably gradual rate.
However, the limited oxygen supply in the air is taking
its toll. You must slow down, so each mile takes much
longer as you ascend. Listen to the guides when they
say Pole! Pole! (Slowly! Slowly!) In late afternoon,
you climb out of the last gully and suddenly find
Horombo Hut at 12,500 feet. Your sleeping bag will
be a welcome sight!
Horombo
Hut
Day 4
- HOROMBO - KIBO
Stage
4. Horombo to Kibo
Trek 10km, 5-7 hrs, Ascent 1106
Alt: 4826
Start
up the steep hills above Horombo Hut and leave two
very special tropical-alpine species of plants behind,
the Giant Lobelia and Groundsel. You climb up a series
of long, rocky hills and finally look down on the
saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi. This moonscape, where
NASA astronauts used to train, is sandy and generally
quite windy and therefore cold; but is a comfortable
walk apart from the obvious altitude problems. You
will soon see the path up the summit and also the
glistening tin roof of the final hut. The last stretch
up to Kibo Hut at 15,500 feet is steep and much more
strenuous than it looks. Pole! Pole! After a light
meal, you will likely hit your sleeping bag for some
badly needed rest, before your midnight assault.
Kibo
Hut
Day
5 - KIBO - HOROMBO
Stage
5a. Kibo - " Uhuru Peak "
Trek: 4km, 7-8 and half hrs,
Ascent 1070, Alt 5896m
Stage
5b. " Uhuru Peak " - Horombo
Trek 4km, 4-6hrs, Descent 2176,
Alt 3720m
You'll
wear all the clothing you have brought to Africa .
At the summit the temperature can be as low as 20
° F before sunrise and snow can be encountered.
The climbing is extremely strenuous and breathing
becomes a very conscious effort. After 6 to 8 hours,
(around day-break) a fortunate group will reach Gilman's
Point at 18,640 feet, generally recognized as the
peak. After
sunrise, it gets warm quickly and layers of clothing
come off fast as you rush back down to the safer altitude
of Kibo Hut. Take a brief rest before moving down
to Horombo Hut where you will spend the night after
perhaps the toughest day of your life. You will have
walked about 12 miles since 1:00am , starting at 15,500
feet, ascending to perhaps 18,640 feet, and then descending
to 12,500 feet, before you can rest.
Horombo
Hut
Day 6
- HOROMBO - ARUSHA
Stage
6. Horombo - Marangu - Arusha
Trek: 18km, 3-5hrs, Descend
1740, Drive 2 hrs
This morning
you will feel elated, either because you made it to
the top or because you are so happy to be headed for
easier altitudes! Walking is now a breeze compared
to coming up, except for your aching bones. However,
you will walk all the way from Horombo Hut, past Mandara
Hut and back to the Park Headquarters at the Marangu
Gate in one day. Tonight, you will probably have at
least on well-deserved bath at the hotel before collapsing
for the night.
NOVOTEL
ARUSHA.
Day 7
- ARUSHA-DEPARTURE
Transfer
to the point of departure either to Nairobi or to
Kilimanjaro Airport .
Today you'll
be transferred to Arusha. Go shopping in the bustling
open market. Transfer to Airport for your homebound

/ KILI 15 MW) KILIMANJARO CLIMB - MACHAME ROUTE
. 8 Day/ 7 Night |
Day
1:
Meet clients after arrival for transfer to the gorgeous
Moivaro Lodge and coffee plantation just outside Arusha.
After you check into the lodge, dinner will be served
on the thatched veranda overlooking the beautiful
gardens that surround the chalets on the plantation.
After a welcome toast and light dinner, a good nights
rest will be welcome. As you close your eyes, you
will definitely feel you have arrived in Africa !
Lalasalama (sweet dreams).
Day
2:
At 7.3am pick up clients at Moivaro lodge and drive
to Machame gate. A two-hour drive to Machame Village
where the porters are waiting for your gear. Enter
the gates of Kilimanjaro National Park and begin hiking
through the lush rainforest. The trail can
get quite muddy so bring the gaiters! Ascend through
the rainforest to the Machame Hut camp and find your
first views of Kilimanjaro as you leave the dense
forest. 6 hours hiking - 3000 meters Camp.
Day
3:
The porters wake you every morning with hot tea and
warm water for washing face and hands. After
breakfast, the day's trek begins with a steep hike
out of camp through a new type of vegetation and volcanic
rock. Below is a sea of clouds over the rainforest
with impressive Mt. Meru , the second highest peak
in Tanzania (4566 meters), rising above the clouds.
You climb a beautiful ridge with Kili right
in front of you. After ascending some volcanic
cliffs, you arrive at the vast moorlands of the Shira
Hut camp. Beautiful views of Kili, Mt. Meru
, and the Cathedral spires. There are some
small springs for washing and collecting water.
3 1/2 miles from camp is the Shira Plateau, a beautiful
side hike for those with the energy! 5 hours
hiking - 3800 meters.
Day
4:
You ascend out of Shira Camp at a nice slow pace as
this is the highest weave been yet. Kilimanjaro
is in front of you throughout the hike. After
a lunch stop, we detour up a steep scree slope to
the impressive Lava Tower , a tall, black volcanic
mass of rock. Some choose to scramble to the
top, being rewarded with beautiful views. Or,
just kick back and relax! On the steep hillside
you can see the Western Breach trail which goes directly
to the Kibo Glacier. After admiring the Lava
Tower , you descend down to a cold glacial stream,
refill your water bottles, and continue on and around
the mountain. At this point, you are continuing to
circumnavigate Kilimanjaro and viewing this beautiful
mountain from many different angles. After
hiking across a sparse lava field, you descend to
the beautiful Barranco Hut camp. There is another
cold stream flowing through this scenic valley with
the impressive Barranco Wall on the opposite side.
3940m, 4 hours.
Day
5:
Wake up to hot tea and breakfast and immediately make
your assault on the steep Barranco Wall, fondly called
it the breakfast climb as it is your first hiking
of the day. You see Kili from a new angle and have
a nice, fairly short walk through scree and over a
ridge to the Karanga River Valley Camp. You
camp beneath the ice falls of the Heim, Kersten and
Decken Glaciers. This is a short day of hiking so one
may choose to do a day hike up the scree field and
then skiî back down or just rest in camp with
a good book. 4000 meters - 3 hours.
Day
6:
After climbing out of the Karanga Valley , the trail
ascends a ridge to the Barafu Hut, your highest camp
yet, at 4600m. This is the camp where you will
be making your ascent to the top. The camp is located
well above tree line and buzzes with the excitement
of the summit attempt. You arrive early to
obtain plenty of rest before your 11:30 pm wake-up
call. 3 hours walking.
Day
7:
Rise and shine at 11:30 pm ! Dressed in your
warmest gear and with plenty of water, snacks, and
headlamps you meet for some tea and cookies.
You begin climbing by starlight, the porters always
reminding you to go pole-pole (that means slowly-slowly).
The steepest section arrives just before Stella Point.
You ascend to the rim of the Kibo Crater between the
Rebmann and Ratzel Glaciers, 4 hours; the last section
before the rim can sometimes be snow-covered and a
ski pole or stick is useful for balance. From
here another hour leads to Uhuru Peak , ( Freedom
Peak ) at 19,340 feet, the highest point on the continent
of Africa . After watching the sunrise and snapping
plenty of photos, you descend back down to the Barafu
Hut for a rest and lunch. Continue down the Mweka
trail (for descent only) through the giant heather
zone to camp at Mweka Hut camp. This is a festive
camp on the edge of the rainforest(where you want
to have a little extra money because beers and sodas
can be purchased here).
Day
8:
Four hour hike down the Mweka trail through the rainforest.
Arrive in the village of Mweka where there are plenty
of wood curios, batiks, T-shirts, and souvenirs for
sale. You have a delicious hot lunch in the village
then get on the bus for an hour-long drive back to
Moivaro lodge in Arusha. After showers and resting,
another big feast awaits you and you celebrate your
accomplishment!
