UG 01) 12 DAY RWENZORI MOUNTAIN TREK

Rwenzori Mountain Climbing

This 12-day tour combines challenging trekking in the spectacular Rwenzori Mountains and the optional ascent of Africa 's third highest mountain, with some wildlife watching in Uganda 's premier national park.

The Rwenzori Mountains National Park on the border of the DRC is a World Heritage Site of outstanding natural beauty. These are the fabled, glacier topped 'Mountains of the Moon' that rise into almost permanent equatorial mists, their slopes covered with giant and strange vegetation. The park offers superb trekking and climbing with fabulous views and unusual scenery. At 5100 metres, Mount Margherita is the third-highest mountain in Africa and climbing to its summit is one of biggest challenges offered by the continent. The most popular trek is the 7-day circuit route, accompanied by porters and guides and taking refuge in mountain huts overnight.

A Rwenzori safari takes you to these beautiful, mist-shrouded jagged mountains, with their 'Lord of the Rings' atmosphere - a distinct change in landscape from anywhere else in Uganda or indeed East Africa .

Duration :  12 days

This 12-day tour combines challenging trekking in the spectacular Rwenzori Mountains and the optional ascent of Africa 's third highest mountain, with some wildlife watching in Uganda 's premier national park.

Uganda 's spectacular Rwenzori Mountains National Park is the location of Africa 's third highest peak - Mount Margherita at 5109 metres. Few people venture into these mountains as they are difficult to access: weather conditions and the terrain are severely challenging. But the park offers superb trekking with fabulous views and unusual scenery. The most popular trek is the 7-day circuit route accompanied by porters and guides, and overnighting in mountain huts or tents. On this route, there's the option of climbing to the summit of Mount Margherita , but only experienced adventurers with mountaineering experience should attempt this climb as it involves a tough glacier crossing and the use of crampons and ice equipment. For those who do reach the top, the achievement is hugely satisfying, particularly as it requires so much effort to get there.

This tour spends seven days in the mountains, allowing for some time to acclimatise to the altitude. The best times to trek are from mid-December to mid-February, and mid-June to mid-August.

UG 03) 7 DAY SAFARI - WITH GORILLA TRACKING

Day 1: You will be picked up from the airport by your guide and driven to Semliki Valley Wildlife Reserve , the oldest protected area in Uganda and home to a staggering array of flora and fauna. Nestled on the crest of the Wasa River Valley is the small and luxurious Semliki Safari Lodge, owned by TUSC and the only member in Uganda of "Classic Safari Camps of Africa." Each tented room has large four-poster beds, Persian rugs and en-suite bathrooms. As the only place in Uganda that offers night game drives you have a good chance of seeing leopard as well as the odd surprise or two, such as genets, cervals, white-tailed and slender mongoose. Overnight at Semliki Safari Lodge (FB).

Day 2: Semliki Valley Wildlife Reserve . Accompanied by guides and resident chimpanzee researcher, you will have an early morning start to track the wild chimps. They are more active than gorillas and tend to be seen at dawn and dusk. If lucky, you will catch the chimps in their night nests and observe them come to life. Return to the lodge for a late breakfast and the chance to lounge by the pool. After lunch you will hop aboard a boat and take a trip on Lake Albert. Here you will not only be stunned by the scenery, with the escarpment plunging down from dizzying heights and the Mountains of the Moon shimmering in the distance, but also by the extensive wildlife all around. The lake is home to numerous species of bird, not least of which is the rare and prehistoric looking shoebill. You will make a slow return back to the lodge sipping on a cold drink whilst watching the sun drop down behind the mountains and the expanse of the Congo beyond. Overnight at Semliki Safari Lodge (FB).

Day 3: After breakfast you will leave Semliki and head south to Queen Elizabeth National Park . This stunning drive takes you through the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, passed a beautiful necklace-like string of crater lakes. Overnight at either Mweya Lodge (FB), a large first class lodge overlooking the Kazinga Channel and the resident hippo population, or the smaller and more intimate Jacana Lodge (FB) situated in the Maramagambo forest, on a beautiful crater lake. If there is time you may want to go on an evening game drive.

Day 4: Queen Elizabeth National Park . An early morning game drive will provide the best opportunity to see a wealth of animals such as elephant, warthog, lion, hyena, Uganda kob, waterbuck and bushbuck. Later, a boat trip will allow you to experience wildlife up close where hippos huff and spray mere feet away, buffalo linger in the shallows and a tremendous variety of birds grace the grasses on the river's edge. Amongst those you will see are the malachite and pied kingfishers, great white and pink-backed pelicans and the open-billed stork. Overnight at either Mweya Lodge or Jacana Lodge (FB).

Day 5: After breakfast you will leave the park heading south via Ishasha, famed for its tree-climbing lions. Keep your eyes trained on the fig trees whose low-lying branches are favored by the lions for providing a welcome rest-bite from the midday sun. Moving on from here you head for the highlands of Uganda, also known as the Switzerland of Africa, which yields fantastic views of the Virunga Volcanoes of Rwanda and the Congo. You will make a final descent into the valley, to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park , which is home to the mountain gorilla. Overnight at Gorilla Forest Camp (FB).

Day 6: Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. An early start with a hearty breakfast will have you prepared for one of the most unique wildlife experiences in the world, gorilla tracking. You will meet your guides at the ranger station at 8.00am who will then lead you deep into the forest. It can take anything from two to eight hours to locate the gorillas and therefore requires a reasonable degree of fitness as well as a sturdy pair of shoes. Once you find them in this mysterious world, you will sit listening to them grumble at each other and cannot help but marvel at the sheer size of the dominant male, the silver back. Overnight at Gorilla Forest Camp (FB).

Day 7: Depart Bwindi after an early breakfast and drive back through some of Uganda's finest scenery to Kampala, in time for dinner. Overnight at The Sheraton Hotel (B&B).

Day 10: Semliki Valley Wildlife Reserve. After breakfast you will climb aboard the vehicle with a packed lunch for the short hop to Lake Albert and a great private boat trip. Here you will not only be stunned by the scenery, with the escarpment plunging down from dizzying heights and the Mountains of the Moon shimmering in the distance, but also by the extensive wildlife all around. The lake is home to numerous varieties of bird not least of which is the rare and prehistoric looking shoebill stork. Stopping at some waterfalls provides an ideal spot for your picnic lunch. You will make a slow return back to the lodge sipping on a cold drink whilst watching the sun drop down behind the mountains and the expanse of the Congo beyond. Optional night game drive and overnight at Semliki Safari Lodge (FB).

Day 11: This morning a private chartered aircraft will collect you from the airstrip at Semliki and fly you up along the shoes of Lake Albert to Murchison Falls National Park. The guide will be waiting for you at the airstrip at Murchison and will drive you to Paraa Safari Lodge via a good game trail. This is well cited for the best wildlife viewing - giraffe, buffalo, lion, elephant, Nile crocodile, hippo, oribi, bush buck, waterbuck. Overnight at Paraa Safari Lodge (FB), which is a luxurious lodge with stunning views over the Nile.

Day 12: Murchison Falls National Park. After breakfast you will go for a morning game drive across borassus forest and savannah, retuning to the lodge for lunch before heading out in the afternoon. Here you will climb aboard a boat and head off to the bottom of Murchison Falls. En-route you will come across large pods of hippo with crocodiles looming in the reeds. Elephants, giraffe, buffalo as well as countless water birds are also regularly seen. The falls are not renowned so much for their height, but for the sheer force of the Nile, the longest river in the world, being squeezed through a 7m gap in the rift escarpment before thundering down 43 meters into a deep pool. The result is a mass of white water and an extremely dramatic sight. Return to the lodge with the option of going on a evening game drive or having sundowners on the verandah. Overnight at Paraa Safari Lodge (FB).

Day 13 : Murchison Falls National Park. After an early morning game drive and breakfast you will leave the park and head east for Kampala via the top of the falls. Here you will be able to witness this spectacle from a different angle and will be able to see the calm before the fall! You may also take a trail up the cliffs to have an aerial view of the falls. Return to Kampala in the afternoon and overnight at The Sheraton Hotel (B&B).

Day 14: This last day will give you a chance to relax as well as explore parts of Kampala. You will be taken on an 'urban safari' to the bustling fruit and craft markets and on to some of the best cafes, galleries and boutiques in town. Tasteful souvenirs (carvings, prints, etc) can be found here. Alternatively, you have the option to go to Jinja, the source of the Nile for white water rafting. Overnight at The Sheraton Hotel or Windsor Lake Victoria Hotel (B&B).

Day 3: Return to Entebbe by boat and then fly by small private chartered aeroplane to Murchison Falls National Park. Overnight at Nile Safari Camp on the edge of the park.

Day 4: Fish from the River Nile by boat below the world-renowned Murchison Falls. Overnight at Nile Safari Camp.

Day 5: Fish from the bank up to the Chobe side of the Nile with over 50 excellent fishing pools teeming with fish. Overnight at Nile Safari Camp.

Day 6: Return to Kampala. Overnight at The Sheraton Hotel.

Day 7: After breakfast transfer to Entebbe airport for your flight home.

The boat has seating for 12 passengers, a large sun canopy, and is equipped with all the necessary gear for fishing on Lake Victoria.

Come to Uganda to fish for one of the largest and most voracious fresh water predators on this earth, the Nile perch. Lake Victoria and the Nile are famed for this fish and many of the world records, including largest fish, have been obtained in Ugandan waters. This fishing itinerary will give you the best of both worlds:

Calm lake fishing in the idyllic waters of Lake Victoria's tropical Ssesse Islands and.

The thrill of fishing the Nile in the dramatic setting of Murchison Falls.

Our boat, Mrs Stanley, is 27- ft made in Canada with a 180 HP inboard diesel engine ensuring we get where we want to be quickly. A big sun canopy is a necessity for the equatorial sun. We have rod holders, fish finders, all lures and tackle, and the experience of navigating the sometimes-unpredictable waters of Lake Victoria.

Lake Victoria - Ssesse Islands

Exotic is the only way to describe these islands. With over 80, this is the largest grouping of islands on the second largest lake in the world. The islands are covered with tropical rainforest, fringed by white sandy beaches and dotted with traditional fishing villages. The main sporting fish to be caught off the islands is Nile Perch, with fish over 50 Kgs being caught frequently and reports of 100Kg catches!

In addition, fishing for Tilapia in the evening with light tackle can be extremely rewarding with fish up to 5lbs.

Accommodation: Bukasa Guest House on the privately owned Bukasa Island has one of the most beautiful views over the islands. It is simple but provides clean accommodation with hearty meals. Andrew Lutaya the owner of much of Bukasa Island is an extremely friendly host and is extremely knowledgeable about the history and culture of these islands.

Island Camp, on the larger more populated Kalangala Island is also popular with fishing clients. Accommodation consists of tents and wooden cabins set on the edge of a beach.

Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls is famed for the 7-metre gorge where the Victoria Nile is compressed from 50 metres before plunging off the edge of the Western Rift Valley into a pool 43 metres below. In so doing the most intense cauldron of white water is created and is exactly where you will be fishing! Below the falls the current runs fast and big, the water is full of oxygen and so the fish are extremely powerful, famed for their intense fighting ability, arguably the most powerful perch in Africa.

We will be fishing with rapalas and live bait known to be the most successful for large perch. Fishing other species can be rewarding including extremely large catfish (up to 50 Kgs) that can be caught on dead bait and several other species caught on small maps and the fly.

Murchison Falls is also famed for its wildlife. The waters where you fish teem with hippos and crocodiles whilst lions, elephant, buffalo, giraffe and many other species are easily seen in the park.

Accommodation: The Nile Safari Camp will form your base in this park. It is an attractive mix of cabins and tented camps set on the bank of the River Nile. The rooms are extremely comfortable and the facilities are good, including a swimming pool to cool off after a hot days fishing.

Other non-fishing possibilities for a boat trip include:

•  Overnight trips to the Ssesse Islands, which boast gorgeously tropical settings with sandy beaches, small fishing villages and untouched rainforest.
•  Trips to the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary.
•  Evening sundowners cruises along the quiet bays and small islands.
•  Longer day trips to further islands.
•  Alternative transportation to either Jinja, the source of the Nile and/or Entebbe.
